Talking Heads Finally Give “Psycho Killer” a Killer Video (After 50 Years)

Background & Legacy

It’s been a long time coming – half a century, in fact – but Talking Heads have officially given their iconic 1977 song “Psycho Killer” its first music video. The timing isn’t random: June 5, 2025 marked the 50th anniversary of the band’s debut performance at New York’s legendary CBGB club, where a young Talking Heads opened for the Ramones on June 5, 1975. In the decades since that unassuming first gig, Talking Heads (David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison) became one of the most influential bands of the late 20th century. They spearheaded the New Wave and art-rock movement with a blend of punk energy, quirky art-school aesthetics, and infectious rhythms that left an indelible mark on music and pop culture. Their 1977 debut album Talking Heads: 77, featuring “Psycho Killer,” is now considered a classic – Rolling Stone ranks it among the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” – and the band’s innovative music (and wild stage antics) have inspired generations of indie and alternative artists.

Despite the song’s enduring popularity, “Psycho Killer” never had an official video until now (it predates MTV by a few years, after all). Fans have had to content themselves with live performances – including Byrne’s wide-eyed, solo acoustic rendition in the 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense – to visualize the track’s nervy energy. That makes this new video release both a nostalgic treat for longtime fans and a nifty introduction for younger audiences who might only know the track from their parents’ killer vinyl collection. And what better way to bridge that generation gap than by enlisting an acclaimed young actress and a visionary director for a fresh take on the Talking Heads classic?

The New “Psycho Killer” Video: Concept & Creativity

The official video for “Psycho Killer” was directed by filmmaker Mike Mills – known for artful films like 20th Century Women and for collaborating with bands (he directed The National’s acclaimed short film I Am Easy to Find). Mills, a lifelong Talking Heads fan, jumped at the chance to interpret the song visually. He brought on board Saoirse Ronan (of Lady Bird and Little Women fame) to star, adding serious acting chops and a contemporary flair to this 1970s classic. Ronan portrays an everywoman office worker trudging through a mind-numbing daily routine – until that routine gradually unravels in bizarre and dramatic fashion. She cycles through the same settings (bedroom, kitchen, office, commute) on repeat, becoming a slightly different version of herself each day as the cracks begin to show. Her outfits loop, co-workers remain oblivious, but internally she swings from calm detachment to outright frenzy. One day the character might be numb and quiet; the next, she’s dancing manically in her kitchen or screaming in a public meltdown at the office copier. By the end, Ronan’s character has gone pretty much feral (we’ll spare the company HR department). It’s a darkly comic, non-literal interpretation that turns the song’s psychological tension into a modern mini-narrative about the pressures of daily life.

Crucially, the video pointedly avoids any clichéd slasher-film visuals that the title “Psycho Killer” might suggest. As the band themselves put it in a tongue-in-cheek press statement:

“This video makes the song better—we LOVE what this video is NOT—it’s not literal, creepy, bloody, physically violent or obvious.” — Talking Heads (on embracing the video’s unconventional approach)

Indeed, instead of gore or a predictable crime story, Mills and Ronan opt for a surreal slice-of-life (or is it slice-of-strife?) that captures the spirit of the song without spelling it out. Mike Mills said he wanted to “play with the subversive, uncategorizable beauty of Talking Heads” and to craft something as “unpredictable and rich as the music itself”. The result is a disquieting portrait of isolation and anxiety that still manages to be oddly fun – think Office Space meets performance art freak-out. And Saoirse Ronan, who happens to be a longtime Talking Heads admirer herself, brings both intensity and sly humor to the role (her dramatic office freak-out and deadpan thousand-yard stares are both chef’s kiss). “It’s hands down one of the coolest things that has ever happened to me,” Ronan said of being in a Talking Heads project, calling it a “lifelong dream come true”. You can feel that enthusiasm in her uninhibited performance, which likely had frontman David Byrne nodding in approval at her delightfully eccentric dance moves.

Reception & Fan Reaction

Upon its release, the “Psycho Killer” video was met with immediate excitement and curiosity. Music publications have praised the visual for its creativity and for Ronan’s committed performance. Pitchfork noted that Ronan “dances, squirms, shudders, and screams through her daily routine” in a way that truly brings the song’s underlying angst to life. Longtime fans have been thrilled to see a new artistic twist on an old favorite – social media buzzed with comments ranging from astonishment (“Wait, Talking Heads made a music video in 2025?!”) to approval of the video’s offbeat approach. Many listeners are applauding how the video doesn’t take the title too literally, instead channeling the track’s neurotic energy into something uniquely entertaining. As one commenter quipped, “Trust Talking Heads to make a music video about a psycho killer where the only thing getting murdered is a plate of spaghetti in the breakroom.” (We assume that was a metaphor. No actual lunch was harmed in the making of this video.)

Critics also see the video as a smart way to celebrate the band’s 50th anniversary. It’s a nostalgic nod that doesn’t feel stuck in the past – in fact, pairing the band’s 1970s art-punk sensibility with Mike Mills’ modern direction and Saoirse Ronan’s millennial star power has proven to be a winning formula. “Psycho Killer” may be nearly 48 years old, but this video shows it’s still as striking and relevant as ever, connecting with new audiences who weren’t even born when the Talking Heads were in their prime. By revitalizing a defining track from 1977 with a 2025 visual spin, the band has reminded everyone why their work endures. As one music outlet observed, the video “revitalizes a defining moment in music history through the eyes of a new generation”, ensuring that the legacy of Talking Heads remains very much alive and kicking.

Legacy Continues (Still Not Stopping Making Sense)

For a band that famously won’t reunite (rumor has it they even turned down a $80 million offer for a tour), Talking Heads still find clever ways to delight their fans. This new video arrives amid a flurry of 50th-anniversary festivities. Just last year, the band’s classic concert film Stop Making Sense got a restored re-release (bringing the band members together for a friendly Q&A, if not a performance). And in a true gift to aficionados, an expansive reissue of their 1978 album More Songs About Buildings and Food is slated for July 2025, complete with rare tracks and goodies for the ultra-nerds. David Byrne, never one to stay idle, has even been spotted on TikTok, proving that he can still be a wild, wild life on modern platforms. In short, Talking Heads are celebrating this milestone not by resting on their laurels, but by re-engaging with their art in fresh ways.

So, whether you’re a veteran fan who wore out your Stop Making Sense VHS tape or a newcomer who only just asked “Qu’est-ce que c’est?” upon hearing that famous bass line, the new “Psycho Killer” video offers something to enjoy. It’s a little bit nostalgic, a little bit bonkers, and 100% Talking Heads. After 50 years, the band once again proves that they can still stop us in our tracks – no psycho required.

Celebrating 51 Years: A Memorable Evening at Cerno’s

An Evening to Cherish: Celebrating 51 Wonderful Years

Bell & Field performing live at Cerno's
Bell & Field setting the mood at Cerno’s

It’s always special when we’re invited back to help celebrate a milestone, and Tom’s parents’ 51st anniversary was no exception. Gathering at Cerno’s in Kewanee, IL, with family and close friends made for a truly heartwarming evening. “Happy 51st Anniversary… you never know” was humorously inscribed on the cake and quickly became the evening’s mantra. And isn’t it true? Each day is precious, and celebrating life’s milestones with loved ones is something we’ll never take for granted.

Highlights from the Night

  • We debuted “Lonely People” by America, and it came together beautifully. It’s always exciting when a new song resonates so effortlessly.
  • A special highlight was when Tom’s son, James, joined us onstage to play “Sweet Home Chicago” alongside his dad. James has remarkable talent on the piano, and his enthusiasm made the moment even sweeter.
  • The most touching moment was performing Tom’s parents’ first dance song from their wedding, “The Wedding Song (There Is Love)” by Paul Stookey. Watching Jim & Cheri relive that moment was genuinely moving.
  • A lively, hand-clapping rendition of “Bennie and the Jets” brought energy and laughter to the gathering.
  • Our wonderful server, Ciara, once again made us feel at home, singing along and sharing in the joy of the evening.
  • In a funny twist, we all sang “Happy Birthday” instead of “Happy Anniversary” before the cake cutting. It took us a moment to realize our mistake, but it added to the evening’s laughter and joy.

New Tunes & Future Plans

Earlier in the day at Tom’s house, we started rehearsing “The Word” by The Beatles—what a great vibe and rich harmonies this song has! We’re excited to debut it at our next performance. We also began working on Chicago’s “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?” but, ironically, ran out of time to perform it this evening. Next time!

A Big Thanks to Family & Friends

Everyone pitched in to help us unload and load our gear—another reminder of the warmth and kindness we always experience from this family. Nights like these leave us a little tired (and perhaps slightly hungover!), but it’s more than worth it for the memories we create together.

As the cake humorously reminded us: “you never know.” So let’s keep celebrating, laughing, and making music together. Thank you to Tom’s family for inviting us to share in this unforgettable evening at Cerno’s.

Another Fun Evening at The V’ue – Highlights from Our May 23 Performance

Bell & Field live at The V'ue, Clinton, Iowa
Bell & Field performing live at The V’ue in Clinton, IA.

Every time we perform at The V’ue in Clinton, IA, we’re reminded of what makes live music so special. There’s something truly magical about this venue—from the cozy, inviting stage setup to the soothing scent of incense drifting through the room. This evening was no exception, with an intimate audience of about 20 enthusiastic friends and music lovers, delicious charcuterie boards, and a perfect acoustic vibe.

The Highlights from Our Set

Audience requests made this night unforgettable! Here are a few standouts:

  • “Summer in the City” by Lovin’ Spoonful – An upbeat crowd-pleaser!
  • “Great Balls of Fire” by Jerry Lee Lewis – Always fun, always fiery!
  • “When You’re in Love with a Beautiful Woman” by Dr. Hook – A delightful surprise! We laughed when we realized we didn’t quite remember the bridge but improvised seamlessly back into the chorus.
  • “Norwegian Wood” by The Beatles – Emulating that iconic sitar melody on the keys never gets old.

A Special Duet with Brooke Byam

A highlight of the night was undoubtedly when Brooke Byam, owner of The V’ue, joined us on stage. We had a request for something by Fleetwood Mac, and Brooke suggested “Rhiannon“—what an inspired choice! Her vocals soared beautifully and soulfully, and we loved adding some additional harmonies.  We think it created some good chills in the audience.  The reaction was very enthusiastic. Thanks for sharing your incredible talent, Brooke!

Selected Favorites from Our Setlist

  • “I Feel Fine” – The Beatles (Brooke captured an awesome video of this!)
  • “Ventura Highway” – America
  • “Small Town” – John Mellencamp
  • “Riders on the Storm” – The Doors
  • “Can’t Buy Me Love” – The Beatles
  • “You Don’t Mess Around with Jim” – Jim Croce

Though encores aren’t typically part of our routine, we didn’t want to turn down this fantastic crowd who wanted more. We wrapped up the evening with a lively singalong to “Brown Eyed Girl“—the perfect finale for a wonderful night!

The Unique Atmosphere & Our After-Show Tradition

The V’ue’s speakeasy-style charm and welcoming vibe make it one of our favorite venues. Brooke always ensures we’re right at home. Before the show, keeping tradition alive, we headed down the street to Holly’s Dogs (a charming eatery housed in a repurposed old bank) and enjoyed a couple of tasty Pork Carnitas Dogs—a perfect addition to the night!

Thanks to everyone who joined us at The V’ue and made this evening so memorable. We’re already excited for our next performance!

The Tallest Man on Earth in Iowa City – A Concert Review

Rocket Ride with The Still Tide

On Thursday, April 17th, in Iowa City the Englert Theater was filled with an undeniable energy, a palpable sense of anticipation that crackled through the historic venue. From the moment the opening band, The Still Tide, took the stage, it was clear the audience was in for a special night.
The Still Tide, a duo comprised of former Tallest Man on Earth guitar tech Anna Morsett and Joe Richmond, delivered a captivating performance. Richmond’s mastery of his homemade synthesizer created mesmerizing soundscapes, a perfect complement to Morsett’s soaring vocals and evocative lyrics.

Their set was a true “rocketship ride,” a dynamic journey that left the crowd buzzing with excitement. As a member of Bell & Field, I found myself particularly drawn to The Still Tide’s stage presence. Their ability to command attention and create such a powerful atmosphere is precisely the kind of energy our band strives to emulate at our own shows.

Dancing Just Above the Earth

But the night, of course, belonged to Kristian Matsson, the Swedish singer-songwriter known to the world as The Tallest Man on Earth. Born on April 30, 1983, in Leksand, Sweden, Matsson began his solo career in 2006. Before that, he was the lead singer of the indie band Montezumas. His music, often drawing comparisons to Bob Dylan, is characterized by its raw emotion, intricate guitar work, and poetic lyricism.
I’ve had the privilege of seeing The Tallest Man on Earth perform in Iowa City before, an experience that remains etched in my memory as the single greatest solo performance I have ever witnessed. Matsson is a self-proclaimed “hyperactive soul,” and this energy translates directly into his stage presence. He doesn’t merely stand and deliver his songs; he dances, he glides, he becomes one with the music. He implores the audience to join him, to connect with him, and to immerse themselves in the stories he weaves through his music.

And what stories they are. Matsson’s lyrics are like a child finger-painting their deepest emotions, expressed in bold slashes and delicate swirls. He has a remarkable ability to create entire galaxies with his words, vast and intricate worlds built from personal experiences and profound observations. His mastery of open tunings on his guitars contributes to this sonic tapestry, providing both sustain and unique tonal colors that add depth and texture to his compositions. It’s also worth noting the impressive array of guitars Matsson employs, many of them vintage instruments, each adding its own character to the sound. He also showcased his versatility with a couple of songs on the banjo and a beautiful rendition of “Henry St.” on the piano.

One of the true highlights of the evening was Matsson’s heartfelt introduction to the song “Major League.” He recounted his childhood experience of seeing the movie Major League and how it sparked an immediate desire to play baseball. He wryly noted that while baseball does exist in Sweden, “it’s just not very good,” delivering the line with his signature self-deprecating humor. Another standout moment was his stunning rendition of Adele’s “When We Were Young.” The emotional outpouring from Matsson resonated deeply with the Englert audience, a shared acknowledgment of “the strange and mean times we are living in,” as he poignantly observed. In that moment, the music transcended mere entertainment; it became a powerful source of connection, offering a much-needed sense of community.

The Tallest Man on Earth’s performance at The Englert Theatre was more than just a concert; it was an experience. It was a reminder of the power of music to connect us, to heal us, and to transport us to other worlds.

A Warm, Musical Morning: Bell & Field at Galva Arts Council

Bell & Field performing at Galva Arts Council
Enjoying the perfect acoustics at Galva Arts Council.

What a delightful morning we had at the “Spring in Bloom” event at the Galva Arts Council! The sun was shining bright, doors wide open, and the warmth of a beautiful Mother’s Day weekend flowed in freely. We were welcomed warmly by the volunteers who took such great care of us—making for a truly memorable and relaxed performance.

A Musical Morning to Remember

Our set was shaped by the intimate, laid-back atmosphere and the acoustically perfect room. The Galva Arts Council has one of those rare spaces where voices and instruments blend effortlessly, creating a uniquely rich sound. We tailored our performance accordingly, leaning into some of our favorite ballads:

  • ‘Something’ by The Beatles
  • ‘Wildfire’ by Michael Murphy
  • ‘Slip Sliding Away’ by Paul Simon

We also ventured into new territory by request, playing Bryan Adams’ “Cuts Like a Knife.” Though a bit ragged around the edges, it came together beautifully for the relaxed crowd. One standout moment was our closing performance of “Blue” by The Jayhawks—a song that continues to deepen and resonate each time we play it.

Highlights & Special Moments

  • Seeing friendly faces like Nancy Anderson and Mike Martin, who graciously snapped some photos for us (always great to connect with another PHP developer!).
  • Enjoying thoughtful conversations with Linda, the president of the Galva Arts Council board, reflecting on the progress and vibrant community around this special venue.
  • The lively backdrop of jewelry-making behind the building and a tasty lunch served during our set, adding to the festive yet cozy feel.

Post-Show Celebration

After the show, we kept our tradition alive and headed over to CCT for a quick lunch and, yes, even a glass of beer (no worries—we still enjoyed our usual Cabernet during the show!). It was great chatting with Jason about our upcoming gig in their exciting new Voodoo Room. As we dined, we couldn’t resist popping Roger Miller’s “King of the Road” onto the jukebox for Chad, turning lunch into a spontaneous sing-along!
